The message is short and alarming: your power, water or gas will be disconnected tonight because a bill was not processed. A mobile number is given for the "officer" handling it.
Why the timing is chosen
These arrive in the evening, after the provider's offices close, so verification is hard and the deadline feels real. Households with children or elderly relatives feel the pressure most, which is deliberate.
The three tells
- A personal mobile number rather than the published helpline printed on your bill.
- Payment demanded by instant transfer or a payment link rather than the provider's billing system.
- A request to install an app so the officer can "confirm the meter reading" — this is remote access.
What to do instead
Open your provider's official app or your last paper bill and check the balance and the helpline number. Disconnection follows written notice and a defined timeline in every regulated market. If you genuinely owe something, you can pay it through the official channel tomorrow.
If you have already paid, gather the message, the number, the account you paid into and any receipt, then report it. Payment by card can sometimes be disputed; instant transfers need your bank contacted the same day.
